General summary

Provides strategic and operational leadership for the Instructional Development team within the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Development (CTLD). Leads curriculum transformation, instructional innovation, and educational development initiatives that support teaching excellence and University priorities. Partners with University and community stakeholders and collaborates across CTLD to ensure initiatives are data-informed and grounded in sound teaching practices.

Major duties

  • Develops and implements strategic plans and annual goals, aligning priorities with the stakeholders. Partners with leadership to translate strategic objectives into measurable outcomes. Represents the team on University committees and task forces and advises academic leaders on instructional design, educational technology, and program innovation.
  • Develops and leads comprehensive project plans for large-scale curriculum transformation and institutional teaching and learning initiatives. Oversees complex instructional development and innovation projects from planning through evaluation, ensuring timely and effective implementation. Leads cross-functional educational initiatives and oversees application of accreditation requirements, accessibility standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Provides operational leadership, overseeing workflow coordination, resource allocation, priority setting, and service quality. Establishes and maintains instructional development standards, frameworks, and quality assurance processes to ensure consistent, accessible, and effective services and initiatives.
  • Provides strategic leadership and direction for team leaders and staff. Supports talent management through hiring, performance evaluation, mentoring, and professional development. Promotes a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning across the department.
  • Collaborates with leadership, academic units, and administrative partners to coordinate instructional development initiatives, and cultivates professional networks and community partnerships that advance instructional development practice and institutional capabilities.
  • Advances evidence-based pedagogical approaches, including experiential learning, problem-based learning, and other high-impact practices across instructional modalities. Researches, pilots, and evaluates emerging technologies, methodologies, and instructional approaches to advance teaching excellence and instructional effectiveness and responds to emerging institutional needs and evolving priorities in support of the department’s mission.
  • Integrates data-informed decision-making into instructional development priorities and initiatives. Establishes assessment metrics and continuous improvement processes using analytics, research, and stakeholder feedback to evaluate program effectiveness, measure impact, document outcomes, and inform strategic planning and operational decisions.
  • Oversees budget planning, allocation, and expenditures within established guidelines. Makes routine decisions regarding resources, technology, and service investments, and ensures responsible stewardship of funds.

Minimum qualifications based upon job documentation and industry best practices. Any current employees not meeting these qualifications will be grandfathered until they move to a different job.

Required education

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.

Required experience

  • Five years' relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience leading strategic initiatives and managing complex, multi-phase projects in higher education.
  • Proven history of supervising and developing professional staff.
  • Advanced knowledge of instructional design theories, models, and best practices across multiple modalities.
  • Knowledge of educational technology tools and learning management systems.
  • Provide oversight and strategic direction for technology-focused instructional work.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards, universal design for learning (UDL), and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) guidelines.
  • Experience applying accessibility as a foundational design principle in instructional and technological contexts.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and assessment findings to inform program evaluation, continuous improvement, and decision-making.
  • Experience with institutional change management and continuous improvement processes.
  • Strong project management skills with ability to coordinate multiple concurrent initiatives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships across diverse organizational units.
  • Experience with assessment and evaluation of educational programs and services.

Physical requirements

Office or other indoor work with minimal physical demands such as occasionally lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds.

Working conditions

Work is generally performed in a well-lit, temperature-controlled indoor environment with occasional exposure to the outdoors or any number of elements.
