WMU's Science and Mathematics Program Improvement unit has received two grants totaling $529,000 from the National Science Foundation to enhance teaching and help retain students in STEM disciplines.

The next community input session to gather feedback on the progress of plans to transform East Hall into an alumni center has been canceled due to the weather-related University closure, and will be rescheduled.

James A. Howell, professor emeritus of chemistry at WMU, died Nov. 16 in Kalamazoo at age 81. Howell retired in 2001 after more than 36 years of continuous service to the University.

Except for essential and emergency services, WMU will be closed beginning Wednesday, Dec. 25, and will reopen Thursday, Jan. 2. Residence halls reopen Saturday, Jan. 4, and classes resume Monday, Jan. 6.

WMU is a partner with the state's other four research universities in a 3.5-year, $1.32 million project sponsored by the National Science Foundation to help boost the number of minority faculty members.

Through the efforts of former WMU President Diether H. Haenicke, WMU was one of the first U.S. universities to award an honorary degree to Nelson Mandela, who died Dec. 5 at age 95. That degree was conferred in 1988.

Nearly 1,900 students will graduate from WMU during commencement ceremonies at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in Miller Auditorium.

WMU's Board of Trustees has approved rate increases for on-campus apartments and apartment-style residential units that will increase rental rates by $7 to $23 per month, starting with the fall 2014 semester.

Beverly R. "Penny" David, professor emerita of theatre, died Nov. 19 at age 85. David was an internationally recognized expert on Mark Twain and was the founding administrator of WMU's Direct Encounter With the Arts Program.
