One Stop offers convenient service to students

The temporary One Stop Convenience Center offers an assortment of campus services in one location. One Stop has been canceled Jan. 6-7 due to the University closure and will remain through noon Friday, Jan. 10.

Richmond Center to host exhibit 'Caroline Gore: mercurial silence'

The exhibit "Caroline Gore: mercurial silence" is on display in the Richmond Center for Visual Arts' Kerr Gallery from Thursday, Jan. 9 through Friday, Feb. 14. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Chinese research grants available to faculty

A research and creative activities grant valued at up to $3,000 is available to support the study of Greater China by WMU faculty members. The deadline to submit proposals is Friday, Feb. 7.

Diversity, leadership institute seeking program proposals

Members of the campus and local communities are invited to submit proposals for 50-minute sessions to be presented during WMU's undergraduate student Diversity & Leadership Institute. Proposals are due by Jan. 6.

Spring registration underway for low-cost Chinese culture classes

Registrations are being accepted for the spring round of Chinese culture classes offered by the Confucius Institute at WMU. Classes begin the week of Jan. 20 and will end the week of April 14.

Trustees approve retirements of 12 faculty, seven staff members

During its Dec. 5 meeting, the WMU Board of Trustees gave its consent to the retirements of 12 faculty members and seven staff members as well as to five faculty resignations and two faculty leaves.

Veteran administrator is associate dean of Lee Honors College

Jane Baas, chair and professor of dance, has been appointed associate dean of the Lee Honors College and will begin her new role Jan. 1, pending approval by the WMU Board of Trustees.

Bands with WMU ties to perform classic Beatles albums

Kalamazoo bands Corn Fed Girls and Red Sea Pedestrians join forces to perform the full albums "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Abbey Road" Tuesday, Dec. 31, at Kalamazoo's State Theatre.

WMU office lands two NSF grants to boost teaching of science

WMU's Science and Mathematics Program Improvement unit has received two grants totaling $529,000 from the National Science Foundation to enhance teaching and help retain students in STEM disciplines.

Second East Hall community input session set

The next community input session to gather feedback on the progress of plans to transform East Hall into an alumni center has been canceled due to the weather-related University closure, and will be rescheduled.

James A. Howell obituary

James A. Howell, professor emeritus of chemistry at WMU, died Nov. 16 in Kalamazoo at age 81. Howell retired in 2001 after more than 36 years of continuous service to the University.

WMU offices closed or on reduced hours during holiday recess

Except for essential and emergency services, WMU will be closed beginning Wednesday, Dec. 25, and will reopen Thursday, Jan. 2. Residence halls reopen Saturday, Jan. 4, and classes resume Monday, Jan. 6.

State research universities partner to increase faculty diversity

WMU is a partner with the state's other four research universities in a 3.5-year, $1.32 million project sponsored by the National Science Foundation to help boost the number of minority faculty members.

WMU among earliest schools to award Mandela honorary degree

Through the efforts of former WMU President Diether H. Haenicke, WMU was one of the first U.S. universities to award an honorary degree to Nelson Mandela, who died Dec. 5 at age 95. That degree was conferred in 1988.

WMU to confer nearly 1,900 degrees during fall commencement

Nearly 1,900 students will graduate from WMU during commencement ceremonies at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in Miller Auditorium.

Sabbatical leaves granted to 37 faculty members

Board of Trustees approves minimal apartment rate increases

WMU's Board of Trustees has approved rate increases for on-campus apartments and apartment-style residential units that will increase rental rates by $7 to $23 per month, starting with the fall 2014 semester.

The WMU Board of Trustees approved a measure to make WMU a tobacco-free campus, effective September 2014. The board also approved apartment rate increases, evaluated President Dunn and granted faculty sabbaticals.

Beverly R. 'Penny' David obituary

Beverly R. "Penny" David, professor emerita of theatre, died Nov. 19 at age 85. David was an internationally recognized expert on Mark Twain and was the founding administrator of WMU's Direct Encounter With the Arts Program.
