WMU offices closed or on reduced hours during holiday recess

Residence halls reopen Saturday, Jan. 4, and classes resume Monday, Jan. 6.

KALAMAZOO—Except for essential and emergency services, Western Michigan University will be closed beginning Wednesday, Dec. 25, and will reopen Thursday, Jan. 2. Holiday recess begins with the end of fall semester Dec. 14, and some campus services will close or have reduced hours starting Dec. 14 through the start of spring semester.

The campus closure applies to non-represented University employees. Many represented employees have contractually scheduled regular work days between Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Thursday, Jan. 2. Represented employees should direct questions to their management.

Public events on campus during holiday recess include a Bronco men’s basketball game at University Arena, a Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra performance at Miller Auditorium, and open swim and open skate events at Gabel Natatorium and Lawson Ice Arena, respectively. Listed below are hours for selected University offices and services. Faculty, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular office on campus is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.

Many offices, including Admissions, Bronco Express, financial aid, First-Year Experience programs, close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, and reopen Thursday, Jan. 2.

All campus academic advising offices close at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, and reopen Thursday, Jan. 2.

Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall hours are available on the Bernhard Center website. All facilities and mall stores are on reduced hours Friday, Dec. 13, through Sunday, Jan. 5. The entire building is closed Sunday, Dec. 15, and beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, through Wednesday, Jan. 1. All facilities and stores resume normal hours Monday, Jan. 6.

Campus computing

  • The Help Desk is closed Sunday, Dec. 15; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 16-20; closed Dec. 21-22; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 23-24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 2-3; and closed Jan. 4. The Help Desk resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, Jan. 5.
  • The Mobile Help Desk is closed. It resumes normal hours at 8 p.m Sunday, Jan. 5.
  • Bernhard Computing Center in the Bronco Mall closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 13, and reopens at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6.
  • University Computing Center lab is closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14-15; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 16-20; closed Dec. 21-22; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 23-24; closed Dec. 25-29; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 30-31; closed Jan. 1; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 2-3; and closed Jan. 4; and open noon to 10 p.m. Jan. 5. The lab resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6.

Sindecuse Health Center, including the pharmacy, is closed Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14-15; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 16-18; open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 19, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 20; closed Dec. 21-22; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 23-24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1; open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 2; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 3; and closed Jan. 4-5. The pharmacy drive-up window is open until 5:30 p.m. on days the health center is open. The health center resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6. Medical emergencies should be referred to local hospitals or other health care providers.

Student Recreation Center hours are available on the center’s website. It is open reduced hours 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 11-12; 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 13; closed Dec. 14-15; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 16-20; open noon to 7 p.m. Dec. 21-22; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 23; open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 2-3; open noon to 7 p.m. Jan. 4-5; and resumes normal hours at 6 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6.

Unified Clinics closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, and reopens Thursday, Jan. 2. Behavioral Health Services is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 16-20; closed Dec. 21-22; open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 23-24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 2. Waldo Library is open reduced hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 13; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 14; closed Dec. 15; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 16-20; closed Dec. 21-22; open noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 23-24; closed Dec. 25 through Jan. 1; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 2-3; closed Jan. 4-5; and resumes normal hours at 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6.

To reduce energy costs during holiday recess and closure, temperature settings in most campus buildings will be reduced to no lower than 55 degrees. Vacant residence halls and classrooms will be set back beginning Dec. 14. Office spaces will be set back starting Dec. 25. All areas except classrooms will be back to the University set point by Jan. 2, when the University reopens. Classrooms will return to the University set point by Monday, Jan. 6.

Also to reduce costs, parking lots outside unoccupied buildings and student commuter lots will not be plowed during the recess and closure periods. All main campus roads and parking areas for on-campus events will continue to be cleared as usual.
