Western announces new director of choral activities

Western Michigan University's Irving S. Gilmore School of Music is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Amanda Quist as the new director of choral activities. A WMU alumna and Michigan native, Quist joins us from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, where she has been the director of choral studies for the past five years. 

WMU business students successfully sweep awards in DECA competition

In a field of more than 1,200 participants, Western Michigan University students bested their competitors at the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference. At the competition, business students tested their skills in a variety of contexts in both prepared and extemporaneous case studies and presentations, with four WMU Haworth students placing in the international competition.

Brush Ease wins first place at Bronco Pitch Competition

The 2024 Bronco Pitch Competition brought out the best from student entrepreneurs across Western Michigan University who pitched their innovative business ideas to a panel of judges. The first-place team consisted of four engineering students with an idea for a more sanitary and environmentally-friendly hair brush called Brush Ease.

Business college begins pilot study of AI for student interview preparation

Dr. Kuanchin (KC) Chen, professor of computer information systems at Western Michigan University, is undertaking a pilot study of artificial intelligence (AI) for student interview preparation, which brings together expertise from three centers within the college in order to use best practices to help students level up their interview skills quickly using AI.

WMU student wins scholarship for excellence in supply chain

Senior Chelsea Prebil has been recognized for her hard work as a supply chain management major. She was recently awarded the Achieving Women's Excellence in Supply Chain Operations, Management and Education (AWESOME) Excellence in Education Scholarship, joining an impressive group of young professionals.

Mathematics student accepted into prestigious international program

Approaching his final year as an undergraduate at Western, Garrett Nichols is looking ahead, applying to graduate programs and thinking about his future career. He recognizes that his studies at BSM, equivalent to graduate-level coursework, will not only challenge him academically but also highlight the intensity of his education and his ability to succeed.

Sky Broncos tie for fifth in 2024 national flight competition

Overall performances helped the 15-member team earn fourth place for the judges trophy, fourth in ground events and 10th in flight events at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) National Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) May 13-18 at the Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport.

Therapy Dog Clinic awarded grant

The Therapy Dog Clinic was established in August 2022 after the presence of therapy dogs within the facility, primarily as part of the Children’s Trauma Assessment Center and Resiliency Center for Families and Children, showed research-based efficacy.

Western advisor receives Patriot Award for support of military student

Derek Andree, the assistant director of admissions and advising in the College of Education and Human Development, received the Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award recognizes civilian supervisors of Reserve Component Service members who demonstrate support during their employment.

A new conference focused on small and medium businesses and their unique needs is being hosted by Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business on Sept. 25 and 26. The Co. Lab offers engaging presentations and interactive sessions led by seasoned leaders who will share their firsthand inspiring experiences and practical advice.

Medieval historian wins WMU’s 2024 Gründler Book Prize

Dr. Jonathan R. Lyon, professor of medieval history at the University of Chicago, is the winner of the 2024 Gründler prize for “Corruption, Protection and Justice in Medieval Europe: A Thousand-Year History.”

Dennis Simpson nominated for MASU Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year

The Michigan Association of State Universities Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year recognition program recognizes outstanding faculty contributions to undergraduate instruction. This year, Western Michigan University nominated Dr. C. Dennis Simpson, professor in the Specialty Program in Alcohol and Drug Abuse in the College of Health and Human Services.
