Awards: Cadet Battalion Commander; Distinguished Military Graduate; Legion of Valor Bronze Cross
A Western Michigan University senior ROTC student, Cody Hocevar, a psychology major, was awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement for his academic success and for going above what is required of him.
“It was a culmination of what I believe in as far as leadership attributes,” Hocevar said. Hocevar, as a well-rounded student, stood out among many others to receive this annual award.
In his years at WMU, he has been involved in the cannon crew, the color guard and has worked extensively with the veteran community of ROTC.
“The Legion of Valor is the same group of individuals who give out the navy cross,” Hocevar said.
The Legion also awards the Air Force Cross and the Medal of Honor in its efforts to promote patriotism and recognition of those who have shown courage in the field, according to Hocevar. Its Bronze Cross for Achievement was set up to recognize the achievements of ROTC students in their military and academic disciplines and to promote leadership, according to the Legion of Valor’s history page on the award.
It is customary for one recipient of a Legion of Valor medal to be presented it by a previous recipient. Hocevar was presented the medal by Timothy S. Guarino, a Vietnam War veteran from Coldwater, Michigan. Guarino received the Navy Cross as Private First Class in the United States Marine Corps for extraordinary heroism, according to the Legion of Valor.
