DAVID W YOUNG – CLASS OF 1960

DAVID W YOUNG – CLASS OF 1960

Young, David William of Traverse City, Michigan

1937 – 2022

David William Young, 84 of Traverse City passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Munson Hospice House.

When David went off to college (WMU) according to her sister, Mom cried for two weeks. I'm sure that didn't happen when I left for CMU or our middle sister left for Albion College. David took ROTC at Western & spent two years in Germany after graduation. He wrote home often about his adventures.

To this day I brag about his climbing the Matterhorn in Switzerland. He was a real motivator. One time when he felt I should be out on my own he gave me 'the baby robin' lecture, "You're just like a big baby robin!" he said flapping his long arms like eagle wings. I got back in school and with his encouragement headed to Germany and landed a teaching job with the Air Force. I was determined to see all the places represented on the charm bracelet he started for me.

I was his favorite, the most gullible in the family, always falling for his tricks. At the same time he was always looking out for me. When he returned from Europe with a spankin' new Austin Healey, he taught me to drive the stick shift and let me take it to high school! Next day when I had taken the bus to school he said, "What's the matter, don't you like my car?" That's all I needed to hear, I was delighted to take his most prized car which Dad named "the black-winged red bird" to class.

But just like living in Portland, a local cop pulled me over & lectured me abut speeding-you couldn't get away with anything! David always said if our parents didn't catch us misbehaving, somebody else would tell them and you'd still be in trouble so he chose the easy route and kept his nose clean.

Oh sure, he grew up, became a Coast Guard helicopter rescue pilot, saving lives, got married & had two great sons, but he'll always be the big brother I adored.   Carol Young Landers
