Annual Events

  • Retreats: These one-day, or two-day leadership retreats, which take place in the fall or spring, are developed and facilitated by students for students. Retreats consist of a wide variety of activities that touch on the following topics: communication, problem-solving, risk-taking, team-building, and diversity. Students have the opportunity to participate in a low ropes course. No matter what level of leadership experience, these retreats are a great way for students to network with other student leaders and build upon their leadership skills. Stay tuned for more information about our next retreat, which is expected sometime during the 2023-2024 academic year.
  • Camp with Us: This is a camping-on-campus event, geared toward those who wish to learn new skills outdoors in a familiar and accessible environment. At this event, participants learn the in's and out's of camping and beginner backpacking, while making meaningful connections along the way. Camp With Us takes place during the fall.
  • Leaders Unplugged: One of the Office of Student Engagement's most popular retreat activities is our Leaders Unplugged backpacking trip both in the fall and late spring. Whether you're an experienced hiker or have never slept in a tent before, backpackers of any level are welcome to spend a weekend with our staff and students to learn the leadership lessons the outdoors can teach us.
  • Escape Rooms: Participate in a variety of in-person escape rooms on-campus. These escape rooms are themed and include the annual Gibbs Haunted House Escape Room. Gather a team of 5 friends to participate or join any team that is attending as seen on ExperienceWMU.
  • Anti-oppression Events: Join student leaders in learning about and advocating for anti-oppression and social justice through workshops and experiential learning opportunities. These events are primarily discussion/activity based and allow students to reflect on what can be done to fight for social justice within their communities.
