ISM student wins competitive scholarship
Sam Sisler
Sam Sisler, a student at Western Michigan University’s Haworth College of Business, recently won the competitive Dr. John H. Hoagland Scholarship from the Certified Purchasing Manager Scholarship Fund. The $1,600 merit-based scholarship is designed to promote the supply chain management discipline and provide assistance to qualified students who have exhibited a keen interest and commitment in furthering supply management professionalism.
Sisler of Crystal Lake, Illinois, was selected for the scholarship based on his academic credentials, career goals, community service, leadership and employment. Some of Sisler’s accomplishments and contributions include:
- Serving as the experience director for WMU’s Supply Chain Management Association
- Completing two internships in the supply chain industry
- Working as a teaching assistant for the Department of Business Information Systems at WMU
- Maintaining a 3.83 grade point average
- Participating in the rural Alaska Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program
“Winning this scholarship helps prove to me that I am doing something worthwhile and making a difference for myself and those around me,” says Sisler. “I am thankful to the outstanding ISM faculty and staff at Western, especially Dr. Zac Williams, Dr. Bret Wagner, Dr. Sime Curkovic, academic advisor Alyshia Garrett and my peer mentors who have pointed me in the right direction throughout my academic journey.”

A global leader in the field of purchasing and supply chain management, Dr. John H. Hoagland was internationally recognized for his contributions to education and research. He created the well-known and still widely used Purchasing Managers Index, which tracks industrial purchasing activity. He also helped institute the Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management. Hoagland served as purchasing professor at Michigan State University from 1952 to 1990.
