The Certification Office in the College of Education and Human Development will facilitate your transcript evaluation and discuss other admissions requirements.
  • If instructed, complete any remaining content area coursework through the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Document completion of 7+ hours of teacher contact in a public school setting (or ES 2000 at WMU) and 30+ hours of student contact in a public school setting (or ED 3200 and ED 4200 at WMU).
  • Pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) for the appropriate secondary education discipline(s).
  • For World Language certification, pass the appropriate MTTC and Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) with advanced low or higher.
  • Apply to the M.A. in teaching: secondary education. *Not all applicants who meet the qualifications will be accepted.
  • Complete the master's degree in secondary education. The 13-month intensive program requires full-time enrollment, and involves a cohort-based approach to instruction and a year-long internship in a public school setting, in addition to foundations and pedagogy coursework. At that time, pending successful completion of the program requirements, you may be recommended to Michigan Department of Education for a teaching certificate in Secondary Education.
