Residency Model

  • Urban Teacher Residency Program recruits and selects current employees with bachelor's degrees in Benton Harbor Area Schools, Kalamazoo Public Schools and other school districts statewide who have the desire and passion to become certified elementary teachers.

  • Urban Teacher Residents co-teach with trained mentors and receive extensive coaching during the school year.

  • The Teacher residency model includes a year-long clinical experience with the required coursework for certification.

  • Resident Teachers work in cohorts and receive targeted feedback on their practice as they apply what they are learning in their coursework.

  • Upon graduation residents are placed in the district as full-time teachers and receive comprehensive induction support for three years.

  • NCTR provides technical assistance to ensure that the partnership implements evidence-based strategies for recruitment, selection, mentoring and coaching for the teacher residency program.
