Muskegon Area Promise Scholarship

Western Michigan University is pleased to offer the Muskegon Area Promise Scholarship to qualified Muskegon Promise Scholars who transfer to WMU from Muskegon Community College. 

Award amount

  • $2,000 ($1,000 per year for two years or until graduation, whichever comes first). 
  • This award is merit-based and renewable for up to four consecutive semesters of undergraduate study, or until graduation requirements are met, whichever occurs first.
  • This award is stackable with the Community College Honors and Community College Scholars Awards. It is not stackable with the Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Scholarship.

Award criteria

In order to qualify for the Muskegon Area Promise Scholarship at WMU, Promise Scholars must

  • Provide WMU with their contact information when they enter Muskegon Community College in the fall immediately following high school graduation
  • Submit a complete admission application file† by the fall transfer application deadline
  • Earn 3.00+ transferable GPA*
  • Earn 24+ transferable credits before beginning at WMU

Renewal criteria

  • Earn and maintain a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average at WMU
  • Enroll as a full-time student at WMU (minimum 12 credits per fall and spring semesters, repeated courses not included)
  • Successfully complete 24 credit hours per academic year (not to include summer sessions or repeated courses)

*GPA is on a 4.00 scale as calculated by the Office of Admissions

†Application requirements depend on the number of transferrable credit hours earned:

  • 24 or more hours: Official college transcripts from each institution attended
  • 23 or fewer hours:  Official college transcripts from each institution attended and official high school transcript from graduating high school or GED score

The Muskegon Area Promise Scholarship is available to domestic students only. Students who previously attended WMU as a degree-seeking student are not eligible.
