Tutor Lab

The Statistics Department Tutor Lab serves the students in our introductory Statistics courses. This is a free service provided to students through course fees. The purpose of the tutor lab is to give you additional support and explanation in supplement to what is being taught in your Statistic course. Our tutors are all teaching assistants working towards either a Masters or Doctorate degree in Statistics. Most of the tutors teach one of our introductory Statistics courses so they are very familiar with the material.

Courses Tutoring is Offered For

STAT 1600: Discovery with Data
STAT 2160: Introductory Statistics
STAT 2600: Data Analysis Using R
STAT 3620: Probability
STAT 3640:  Foundations of Data Analysis

All of our tutors are able to assist with STAT 1600 and STAT 2160. Because the other courses are more specialized, not all tutors are able to help with these materials. Please consult the syllabus from your instructor for specific times tutoring is offered for your class.

In Person Tutor Lab

Our tutor lab is located at 2261 Rood Hall. When you arrive, you will be asked to sign in with only the course you’re enrolled in. Our spacious tutor lab allows students from the same course to sit near each other to offer the best assistance.

Our tutor lab does have two computers for those needing help with Statistical software taught in our courses.

Virtual Tutor Lab

Virtual tutoring is provided virtually through the Microsoft Teams Academic Support Hub. To receive tutoring support in your course, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Microsoft Teams
  2. Select (or add if it doesn’t appear on the student’s page) the ‘WMU Academic Support Hub’ team
  3. Select ‘Ask For Help Now’
  4. Announce on the chat that you are there to tutor

Once you are in the Academic Support Hub, please post the name of the class that you need help with in the chat (similar to posting on a Facebook wall).  Once a post is made, a course assistant will begin a video chat to assist you.  The scheduling for tutoring availability can be found on the Support Hub as well.

What To Expect

Our tutors are here to help you! They can help cement the concepts taught in class or provide additional examples. Some students come to the tutor lab and wish to just work on their material, only asking questions if they have any. Others come to get help. Both are great! We are eager to meet your needs in whatever way is best.

It is best to bring any class materials that will be beneficial to the tutor lab with you. While we do have some materials from the course, having everything will be best. This will maximize your experience.

Please note that coming to the tutor lab is not a substitute for attending class. While our tutors will help clear confusion on topics, they are not there to reteach the lesson. Additionally, tutors can only provided limited help on assignments.
