Working With a Spotlight

The bottom of the page is used for featured links, referred to as "spotlights." It may include links to pages outside the section and is frequently used for that purpose, since the first column may only be used for pages within the section.

  • A spotlight appears on every page in its assigned section unless you change this behavior by using the Limit To or Exclude From fields discussed later.

  • Spotlights may include an image link with an associated text link below it, but may also contain text links without images.

  • Do not display more than four spotlights (that include an image) on a single page.

  • Titles should be written in news case (cap the first word and proper nouns).

    • Try to keep links to one or two lines—three lines is the maximum allowed.

    • Do not use ampersands (&) and do not use ALL CAPS.

How to create a spotlight

  1. Click on Add Content in the administration menu and click on Spotlight.

  2. Enter a Title, this is what displays under the image—capitalize only the first word and proper nouns.

  3. Choose the Section if you have more than one.

  4. Choose an image file and click Upload.

  5. Enter Alternate textrequired for all images.

  6. Enter a Title if desired. This is a tool tip that is seen when the user hovers the mouse over the image.

  7. Enter a Link if this picture will link to additional information (optional). This is the URL that will be visited when a user clicks the image. If the link resides on WMU's main wmich.edu Web server, enter a relative path (do not enter https://wmich.edu/, but enter everything following). You do not need to enter a trailing slash.

https://wmich.edu/sample/about/facts/ should be entered as: sample/about/facts. For all other pages, including wmich.edu subdomains, enter the full URL: https://gowmu.wmich.edu.

  8. Enter a Weight if you wish to control the order in which the spotlights will appear.

    • Spotlights with lower weights will float to the top of the sidebar, those with higher weights will sink to the bottom.

    • If no weights are assigned, spotlights will display by creation date, with the newest on top.

    • If two spotlights have the same weight, they will sort by creation date, with the newer one on top.

    • By default, all spotlights start with a weight of 0.

  9. If you wish to limit a spotlight to only certain pages, use the Limit To field. Begin typing in a page title, when the title appears in the box below the field, click on it. Your spotlight will now appear on only this page. It will be excluded from all other pages in the section.

  10. To exclude a spotlight from certain pages, use the Exclude From field. Begin typing in a page title, when the title appears in the box below the field, click on it. Your spotlight will now be excluded from this page.

  11. Click the Save button at the bottom of the page.
