Innovative Thinking in Challenging Times

Lindsay Land, B.B.A.'04, used what she learned at the Haworth College of Business, along with the hands-on experience she gained from two internships while in college, to help her obtain a job as chief human resource officer at Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union. She has been learning and growing within the organization since 2005 and was recently promoted to chief operations officer. In this position, she increases business efficiency and member satisfaction while also ensuring credit union compliance with state and federal laws.

Land entered the financial industry at an interesting and challenging time. The aftermath of the financial crisis proved that financial institutions were not “too big to fail” and while Kellogg Community Federal Credit Union is financially strong, new regulations had a significant impact on day-to-day operations and how financial institutions would remain viable.

The recent economic shift is also causing credit unions to find more innovative ways to continue serving members while maintaining a sound credit union. Land sees this challenge as an opportunity for institutions, especially credit unions, to re-invent themselves and is ready to step up to the task, though she remains grounded, “I have enjoyed learning about the financial services industry and am very appreciative of all the opportunities I have been given,” she says.

Land stays involved with Western by presenting at SEHR (Society for Excellence in Human Resources) meetings and other student/graduate activities. In true Bronco spirit, she takes the time to learn from all around her, whether they are co-workers, employees or current students.
