B.B.A.'06, on his BIS Experience

It all started at Coffee Works...

Well, perhaps that’s a bit misleading, but the popular coffee shop near campus was Bryon Pass’s favorite spot to meet with his classmates and work on team research projects throughout his four years at Western. It really all started in the classroom with quality instruction, challenging CIS courses, and team projects, all of which led Bryon to his current role as a consultant at Accenture, where he has worked for two and a half years.

In fact, Bryon’s work today mirrors his days as a laptop nomad in Coffee Works, working on projects for class. As a consultant, his work is ever-changing, and he is deployed to areas all over the U.S. to help on special projects. In New Jersey, he worked as a net developer to help build a custom underwriting asset. In Iowa, he helped an insurance company test their interface and downstream systems. His latest project has taken him to California where his work as a business analyst has him designing documents and writing algorithms.

Pass credits his experience in the business information systems department as the key to his current success, “My courses gave me real-world experience in client interfacing, gathering requirements, analyzing expected results, building a system, and testing it with other stakeholders. That experience was very important when it came to getting a job.”

Pass also notes that his data mining course was particularly helpful, “When working with different teams and sources of information, you don’t always get all the pieces of the puzzle you need. I’ve used skills from that class to make inferences on requirements and also to predict possible functionality options that the client may want in the future.”

To put it simply, Pass is exhilarated by his career at Accenture. Working as a consultant in different locations across the U.S. in all the phases of a project lifecycle and with people who love their jobs as much as he loves his, has been his dream job. A diverse skill set and well-rounded approach to troubleshooting are what Pass took away from the BIS department and what he brings to every job, whether he is working on it in a company headquarters or in his favorite local coffee shop.
