Graduate Assistant and Doctoral Associate Appointments
This page has been superseded. For current information please read about Graduate Funding Opportunities here.
Funded positions vary from year to year in the Department of History at Western Michigan University. The following are available as funding allows:
Graduate assistantships
The Department of History at Western Michigan University typically is able to fund four to six new graduate assistantships for master's students each academic year. If you are not already enrolled in the history master's program, apply for admission and funding prior to the January 15 deadline. If you have been admitted to the master's program in history without funding, or if you wish to apply for an extension of funding beyond two years, should consult the Graduate Handbook for application procedures.
Doctoral associateships
The Department of History also typically funds two to four new doctoral associateships each academic year. If you are not already enrolled in the history Ph.D. program, apply for admission and funding prior to the January 15 deadline. If you have been admitted to the Ph.D. program in history without funding or you wish to apply for an extension of funding beyond four years should consult the current Graduate Handbook for application procedures. The doctoral associate ordinarily carries with it a teaching assignment in either summer I or summer II, so an application for summer funding is not necessary.
Summer appointments
Each fall semester current teaching assistants will be made aware of positions available for the subsequent summer I and summer II sessions. The number of positions is dependent on the course schedule and availability of funds. These awards will be made competitively to current teaching assistants through an application process. Students not on a continuing graduate assistant appointment will be considered for summer teaching or research positions if resources are available. Students should notify the director of graduate studies of their desire for a summer position no later than January 15.
