Sarah Swallow Beuker graduated with honors from both the University of Michigan (BA, English Lit, 1991) and University of Michigan Law School (JD, 1996). Moving to Kalamazoo in 1996 to begin her legal practice, Sarah spent two decades in private practice with firms in southwest Michigan (Miller Canfield, McCarthy Smith, and Warner Norcross) before joining WMU’s Office of Legal Affairs, Risk and Compliance in November 2018. Sarah has extensive experience in employer-side labor and employment law, as well as large scale litigation defense, and eDiscovery matters. Her litigation experience includes representation of WMU and other Michigan universities.
Before law school, Sarah was an assistant fiscal analyst with Michigan’s House Fiscal Agency, a reporter for her hometown newspaper The Alpena News, and she managed a highly competitive, successful campaign for re-election of the 26th Circuit Court’s longest serving judge, Hon. Joseph P. Swallow. She's a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA), and Sarah serves on its Membership and Member Services Committee. Also a member the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, and Kalamazoo County Bar Association, Sarah brings her extensive experience to WMU, ready to assist administrators and staff with their Contract needs and related legal issues. Sarah lives in Portage with her wonderful husband, their two teenage children, and an irrepressible Labrador Retriever.
