WMU Guide Regarding Requests Under Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act

In 1976, the Michigan Legislature enacted P.A. 442, known as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

An act to provide for public access to certain records of public bodies; to permit certain fees; to prescribe the power and duties of certain public officers and public bodies; to provide remedies and penalties; and to repeal certain acts and parts of acts.

See WMU's Freedom of Information Act Policy for information on how to submit a FOIA request.

Public Policy

It is public policy of this state that all persons, except those persons incarcerated in state or local correctional facilities, are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts of those who represent them as public officials and public employees, consistent with the Act. The people shall be informed so that they may fully participate in the democratic process.

Fees charged for processing requests under FOIA will be charged as allowed by the Michigan FOIA. Fees charged for duplicating will be based on guidelines provided by the University's Department of Logistical Services.
