Some WMU offices reduce hours, close over spring recess
KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Some campus services at Western Michigan University will be on reduced hours during spring semester recess, which begins Monday, March 6, and continues through Friday, March 10. There are no classes during the recess, but most WMU offices are open normal hours. In addition, there are no classes Friday, March 3, for Spirit Day.
Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 12. Classes resume beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, March 13.
There are several public events on campus during spring recess, including the University Theatre’s performance of "Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher" at Shaw Theatre in the Gilmore Theatre Complex; the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters annual meeting in Sangren Hall; the Western Invitational Jazz Festival opening concert featuring George Garzone on saxophone at the Dalton Center Recital Hall; the Western Invitational Jazz Festival closing concert featuring the University Jazz Orchestra at the Dalton Center Recital Hall; and spring recess day trips with international students throughout the week.
Listed below are hours for selected University services. Faculty, staff, students and the public are encouraged to call ahead to make sure that a particular service is open. For emergencies only, contact WMU Public Safety at (269) 387-5555.
Hours for campus offices and services
Many offices, including Admissions, Bronco Express, financial aid, First-Year Experience programs and all University academic advising offices will maintain normal hours throughout the recess.
Bernhard Center and Bronco Mall store hours are available here. The building closes at 8 p.m. Friday, March 3; is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 4; open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 5; open 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 6-10; open 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday, March 11; and open 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday, March 12.
Sindecuse Health Center and its pharmacy are closed Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5 and March 11-12 and open normal hours Monday through Friday, March 6-10.
Student Recreation Center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 3; closed Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5; open reduced hours 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 6-10; and open noon to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12. The pool will be closed March 6-12. The recreation center resumes normal hours at 6 a.m. Monday, March 13. The center's main office will maintain regular hours, opening at 8 a.m., Monday through Friday, March 6-10.
Unified Clinics will maintain normal hours throughout the recess.
Waldo Library is open reduced hours, 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, March 2; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 3; closed Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5; open 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 6-10; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 11; and noon to midnight Sunday, March 12.
The Swain Education and Maybee Music and Dance libraries will be closed Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5; open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 6-10; closed Saturday, March 11; and open from 2 to 10 p.m. on Sunday, March 12.
Archives and Regional History Collection will also be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 4; closed Sunday and Monday, March 5-6; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, March 7-10; open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 11; and closed Sunday, March 12.
Special Collections and Rare Book Room will be closed Friday to Sunday, March 3-5; open by appointment Monday through Friday, March 6-10, and closed Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12. The libraries resume normal hours Monday, March 13.
Campus computing
- Bernhard Center computer lab closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 3, and resumes its normal 24-hour operation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 12.
- Information Technology Help Desk closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 3; is closed Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5; open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 6-10; and closed Saturday, March 11. The Help Desk resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, March 12.
- Mobile Help Desk is closed Friday, March 3, through Saturday, March 11. It will resume normal hours Sunday, March 12.
- University Computer Center lab closes at 5 p.m. Friday, March 3 and remains closed Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5; is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, March 6-10; closed Saturday, March 11; and resumes normal hours at noon Sunday, March 12.
To reduce energy costs during the recess, heating and cooling systems in all classroom buildings controlled by the WMU Building Energy Management System will be in holiday mode. Air handlers will not run during this time unless a space is exempt from the program or the temperature in a particular space goes outside of the range of 60 to 85 degrees. Portions of a particular building that do not normally go into night setback mode will not go into holiday mode.
