Student participation encouraged for sustainability survey

KALAMAZOO, Mich.— The Office for Sustainability at Western Michigan University will conduct the Student Sustainability Survey from mid-March through the end of the semester.

In 2010, at the request of students and with the approval the Board of Trustees, the University began charging students $8 per semester to fund campus sustainability projects, initiatives, research, and student jobs.  The Survey is part educational, gauging student sustainability knowledge and perceptions, and it also asks students to prioritize campus sustainability projects and initiatives. The results of the Student Sustainability Survey inform decision-making on campus projects and initiatives and help WMU allocate the Sustainability Fee wisely and with respect to student preferences. For example, the 2018 survey found that students had an interest in increased compost initiatives. Since then, the Office for Sustainability collects pre-consumer food waste from Valley Dining Center and composts it at the Gibbs Site.

Each survey participant will be entered in a drawing to win one of three gently used bikes. The bikes are pre-selected by our Open Bike Shop mechanics, and there will be a variety of sizes to choose from.

Starting in mid-March the survey can be found at wmich.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0wAurgYYEwNeHEa.
