English Proficiency

International students must demonstrate English proficiency to enter a degree-seeking program at Western Michigan University. Students who do not meet the minimum requirements to begin academic coursework may begin in the WMU Center for English Language and Culture for International Students (CELCIS).

English Proficiency Requirements

Undergraduate students may demonstrate English language proficiency through one of the following approved tests (taken within two years of the time of application submission) or educational qualifications:

Exceptions to English Proficiency Requirement

Applicants do not need to submit proof of English language proficiency if they have successfully completed:

  • Four years of upper secondary school in one of the countries below, or
  • One year of full-time tertiary (university-level) education in one of the countries below:

For countries marked with an asterisk (*), the waiver applies only if the applicant studied in an English language educational system.
