Come catch the sustainability buzz! To celebrate Western Michigan University’s commitment to sustainability and introduce the depth and breadth of campus programs and projects, WMU’s award winning Office for Sustainability invites you to attend the 2017 Fall Sustainability Celebration on Thursday, September 28. Whether you are new to sustainability or an established champion, there will be a variety of events and activities to engage and challenge you.
Doors open at 2:00 p.m. with a lively outside bazaar that will feature campus sustainability groups, EcoJug distribution for new students, fresh locally grown food from the Gibbs House, live music, and a raffle every half hour. But the festivities don’t stop there! Everyone is also invited inside the office for an open house that will showcase programs and projects that range from internships and experiential learning opportunities to Student Sustainability Grants, research projects, and new campus resources. You will also have the opportunity to meet recent OfS graduates who are becoming emerging sustainability leaders and participate in a Q & A session with them. In addition, there’s a place to share your great ideas. The Wecultivate it wall is a place to share your ideas for sustainable projects or collaborations that help build a culture of sustainability on campus and beyond!
In addition to the bazaar and the open house, the Fall Sustainability Celebration concludes with the 2nd Annual Sustainability Slam, an elevator pitch meets Ted Talk experience where participants make two-minute cases for campus or community projects that advance our mission of improving quality of life for all. The Sustainability Slam, which runs from 7:00 – 8:30 PM, is intended to “cultivate a space for leveraging good ideas, networking, and having fun while creating new opportunities for advancing collaboration on campus and beyond,” says Harold Glasser, WMU’s Executive Director for Campus Sustainability. “We are excited to bring together a diverse group of participants and ideas. If past events have shown us anything, it’s that there is something really special happening in our community and we’ve only begun to tap into the possibilities.”
The Fall Sustainability Celebration is free and open to the public and anyone interested in participating in the Slam is encouraged to visit the 2017 Sustainability Slam webpage for participant guidelines. The deadline for entries is midnight on September 25.
