Sustainability Celebration

Sustainability Celebration

WHEN:         Friday, Sept. 27, 2024

WHAT:          11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WMU's Office for Sustainability (OfS) is excited to announce that the annual WMU Sustainability Celebration will take place on campus at the Board of Trustees Plaza on Friday, September 27, 2024. This event celebrates the work of sustainability leaders from across the University including students, faculty, and staff. It also connects new students with a growing number of sustainability leaders on campus and in the Kalamazoo area.

Open House

The Sustainability Celebration commences at noon with an open house that will feature current OfS program opportunities, EcoEssential distribution for new students, live music and refreshments. Participants will also have a chance to engage with other environmental organizations in the Kalamazoo area!

What’s New for the Celebration Event This Year?

  • New location! In the past, the Office for Sustainability hosted the annual Celebration way-out-there on the edge of main campus. This year, we will gather in the heart of campus.
  • The celebration will focus primarily on internal WMU efforts, leaders, and groups.
  • We’ll make plans together. Sustainability and climate change solutions are prominent in WMU’s new strategic plan, and WMU is in the middle of a campus master planning effort right now. Broncos are making plans that will shape WMU for decades to come. Let’s help shape those plans and then get to work making change together.
  • Boosting sustainability efforts led by WMU Registered Student Organizations (RSOs): Celebration attendees can support sustainability efforts led by WMU RSOs by voting. The Office for Sustainability will steer available donor funding to RSOs in proportion to the votes received to recognize and lift up their work.
  • Collaboration with WMU Library: This partnership will introduce a variety of engaging activities for participants and serves as a kickoff for future innovations in sustainability.
  • We are placing a special focus on the topic of “zero waste”. We will highlight what it is as well as celebrate current zero waste efforts on campus and ways to engage.
  • It’s been a record hot year across the globe, again. As always, we will face down the climate change dilemma while also mobilizing the transformational change needed to address justice, pollution, waste, and other intersectional environmental, social, and economic issues.

Join us at the Celebration to work on responses, solutions, and the culture change needed for local-to-global sustainability.

Bring your Bike

Guests are encouraged to bring their bikes to the event. The Office for Sustainability and Open Roads are collaborating to fix bikes during the event. The teams will be servicing bikes during the celebration. No registration is required for this free routine bicycle maintenance and advice! This portion of the event is first come, first served.
