Third-Grade Teacher at Grand Rapids Public Schools

I teach 3rd grade at Congress Elementary in Grand Rapids Public School. My job includes teaching all academic subjects, while building relationships with my students and staff.

What is the most rewarding and the most challenging part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is watching my students grow in so many different ways each day. The most challenging part of my job is trying to meet every single one of my students’ educational, emotional, and social needs.

If you had a campus job or internship, how did they impact your career development?

I worked on campus in the Burnham Dining Hall as a Student Supervisor. This job allowed me to improve my leadership, customer service, and problem solving skills, which are all skills I use in my career now. I also had my teaching internships through WMU that gave me the teaching experience that I needed before graduation and my first job.

What advice do you have for students looking for their career after college?

Do not get discouraged in the applying and interviewing process. It can be hard to find a school that wants to take a chance on a first year teacher, but the right job will come your way! Use every interview you get as a learning experience.
