Advising

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the programs in the environment and sustainability at Western Michigan University, it is very important that you meet regularly with all your advisors.

The College of Arts and Sciences Advising staff is taking over advising for all of our majors (Environmental & Sustainability Studies, Freshwater Science & Sustainability, Sustainable Brewing) and minors (Environmental & Sustainability Studies), and they are now the prime point of contact for you for any advising needs you may have. The college advising office is on 2nd floor in Friedmann Hall. Make an advising appointment.

On that site there are buttons you can use to select your major to be taken directly to an appointment schedule specific to your major. You can then sign up for a 30-minute appointment when necessary, and appointments are possible each week during the entire year (keeping in mind that the Advising Office has some times of year that are particularly busy with other activities, such as during Orientation in the summer).

The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is very invested in your success, and we encourage you to make the most of the professional advising help available to you through the Advising Office. Please also note that you should never hesitate to reach out to Dr. Vonhof or other IES faculty if you have questions about careers in your chosen field, career preparation advice, advice on how to successfully transition to university or how best to study for your courses, how to become engaged in local environmental initiatives or volunteer opportunities, or want to know more about any of the fields we research and teach.
We look forward to engaging with you in our courses this coming year, and we hope to see you at some or all of the many events we sponsor and organize. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.
