Recalibrating Campus

One principle goal is to align campus facilities and physical footprint with current and projected enrollment needs by prioritizing adaptive reuse, renovation, and selective demolition. Additionally, sustainability will continue to be integrated throughout the institution to reduce carbon emissions, conserve resources, and enhance natural spaces, ensuring that investments are financially responsible and benefit both present and future generations.

WMU can optimize its existing land and facility resources by densifying campus in specific districts while reducing square footage in other areas of campus.

What does a recalibrated campus look like?

Graphic representation of a recalibrated campus from 1967 through 2025 and beyond.
  • 1967: Campus growth post war.
  • 2003: Expansion of campus core as enrollment and building needs increased.
  • 2024: Strained infrastructure and campus core with enrollment equal to that of 1967.
  • Recalibration - 2025 and beyond: Recalibrated campus with strategic investment in districts with higher density and vibrancy but an overall more sustainable and efficient campus.
