Dr. Coryell Produces Documentary
Dr. Janet Coryell, professor of history, served as associate producer, screenwriter, and narrator for a documentary film on professional women’s baseball titled A Team of Their Own: The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The documentary was released in October 2015.
Using interviews with dozens of former players, "A Team of Their Own" provides an engaging look into the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which operated from 1943-54 in several cities in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan, including Kalamazoo. The players’ commentaries link their experiences to issues related to gender inequality, economic opportunities, and notions of femininity during the 1940s and 1950s.
The video is produced by the Grand Valley State University Veterans History Project and was also partially funded through support from the WMU Department of History’s Burnham Macmillan Endowment Fund.
