Hydrogeology Field Course – Course Structure, Grading, and Personal Equipment

Course Structure

The Hydrogeology Field Course (HFC) at Western Michigan University consists of six one-week modules, typically held Monday through Friday (and sometimes Saturday if needed dependent on objectives and unforseen circumstances), with daily sessions typically starting at 8 a.m. and often extending into the evening. Classes are based on and near the WMU campus in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with regional field excursions.

The course emphasizes hands-on training in modern techniques for sampling, monitoring, and evaluating groundwater systems, including contaminated systems, aquifer testing, and selected geophysical methods. Lectures are minimal and primarily support field exercises or demonstrations.

Each week counts as one semester credit for undergraduate or graduate students. WMU hydrogeology majors are generally required to complete all modules unless their advisor determines otherwise. Equipment demonstrations and guest lectures are often provided by manufacturers, consultants, regulators, and course supporters, offering exposure to modern field technologies and networking with industry professionals.
