Enrollment

Western Michigan University study abroad specialists handle registration for study abroad courses. The Course Equivalency Approval form, which students receive from Study Abroad during the advising process, will indicate how many total credit hours a student plans to take each semester. Students who are unsure of how many credit hours to take will automatically be registered for 12 credit hours during fall or spring semester and three credit hours during summer I or summer II session. If necessary, these credit hours may be adjusted at the credit evaluation stage.

By default, students will be registered for graded credit; however, if a student wishes to take certain courses for credit/no credit—only permissible with elective courses that will not count for WMU major, minor, or general education requirements—they may specify this on the Course Equivalency Approval form or via email to their study abroad specialist within the first 10 class days for fall or spring semester program, or within the first five class days for summer I or summer II program. After this period, the grade mode cannot be changed. The Academic Credit page contains detailed instructions on securing a successful transfer of credits.
