Learning Assistant Program

Student writing on white boardThe College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University wants to help you succeed right away in your major program. Gateway courses come near the beginning of a program and are required for every student graduating in the discipline, like BIOS 1600 for biological sciences majors and PSY 1000 for psychology majors.

The Learning Assistant Program offers direct support to students in gateway courses via in-class assistance and by facilitating study sessions to review course objectives and develop effective study techniques. A learning assistant will be present in the classroom to assist the course instructor and students. The learning assistants will also lead three study sessions each week for the students in their assigned section. The schedule below details meeting times and locations for study sessions or call the Student Success Services office at (269) 387-4252.

Service Continuity Update (3/25/2020)

By now, you have received multiple communications from President Montgomery and our Provost, Dr. Jennifer Bott, regarding the university’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak. WMU remains open and the Learning Assistant Program is here to provide support and assistance with selected higher enrollment College of Arts and Sciences courses. Learning assistants offer review sessions Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (see the weekly schedule below for specific review session per class).

In alignment with courses being offered through distance education for the remainder of the semester, Learning Assistant Program services will be offered from a distance as our staff works remotely during this time. You will be able to connect with learning assistants via email, phone and Microsoft Teams chat.

A new Microsoft Teams channel has been created specifically to allow you to join and hear review sessions. You can access this by logging into https://wexchange.wmich.edu with your BroncoNet ID and password, clicking on the Teams app logo, then clicking on the following link: Learning Assistants. You may use the web app or download the Teams app to your computer. For more information about utilizing this option, see the instructions below.

You may call our office at (269) 387-4252 or email Katie Easley. Phone calls and emails will be attended to in the order received.
