When Dr. Mushtaq Luqmani arrived on WMU’s campus in 1977 to interview with Dean Darrell Jones, he was instantly impressed by the towering College of Business on East Campus, but thought Kalamazoo would be a brief stop on his journey. Mushtaq was ABD, which means that he had “all but his dissertation” completed in his Ph.D. program, and his plan was to teach at WMU for a time and move elsewhere.

“My wife Zahida and I had no idea that our lives were about to change,” says Mushtaq. “We became passionate Broncos almost instantly. Now, 43 years later, I have taught every type of marketing class the department offers, and Zahida is both a WMU business graduate and a dedicated Western employee since 1985.”

In 2009, he became chair of the Department of Marketing, the largest academic department at the University with more than 1,100 marketing majors and three nationally recognized programs. In a career spanning four decades, Mushtaq accumulated many impressive accomplishments including:

  • Publishing more than 70 articles and co-authoring two marketing texts, adopted by numerous universities.
  • Serving as an editor for the Journal of Asia-Pacific Business and as an advisory board member for a number of academic and international journals.
  • Receiving major U.S. Department of Education Business and International Education grants for the college’s internationalization efforts.
  • Serving as United Nations Transfer of Knowledge through Expatriate Nationals Expert on Pakistan.

“I hope my students know that everyone has unique skills that can transform not only their lives, but their communities. Be a lifelong learner and be willing to pass on your knowledge to positively impact the people around you. Each day, I hoped that I was able to advise and mentor students in a manner that made a difference in their lives.”
