Maintaining Relationships Abroad

Hello Broncos!
I’ve definitely had my moments of missing home and missing my friends and family. Back at home I have a boyfriend who I have been dating for about four years. It has definitely been difficult being away from him but we communicate everyday and we make sure to Facetime a few days a week. I think the key to maintaining a relationship when you can’t physically be together is to make sure you’re sharing things about your day, your experiences, etc. Just so you can still feel like a part of their life and them yours even when you’re far away. I don’t think you need to talk every second of every day but I do think it’s important to at least keep each other in the loop. Even sharing the small things that may not seem important.
My boyfriend actually just left this morning, he came to visit over his spring break! I am so thankful he got to come for the week! Before this we never spent that much time away from each other, However he actually goes to Michigan State so not seeing him during the week is something that I was already used to, so that has made things easier. Surprisingly the time leading up to his visit went by pretty fast. Of course spending the week with him did kind of make me miss him more but I have no worries about the distance hurting our relationship!
If any of you are thinking about studying abroad and afraid to leave friends, family or a boyfriend/girlfriend behind, I really suggest to just go for it. I was hesitant at first because I knew how much I would miss everyone but I know that if that had kept me from going I would have regretted it! Maintaining a relationship while studying abroad is really not that hard as long as you make sure to talk daily and always communicate how you’re feeling!
