Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE)

Thank you to everyone who has participated in the FSSE for Western! We truly appreciate all of our instructors, and especially those who took the time to provide us with your thoughtful feedback so that we could learn about how you view the experiences of our students, both in and outside of the classroom. By sharing your voice, you are helping us to collect the information we need to make positive changes at Western for all of our students both now and in the years to come.

What is the FSSE?

At WMU, we participate in the FSSE about every three years. The FSSE was designed to complement the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). This instructional staff version (for faculty, instructors, and graduate students who teach) focuses on:

  • Instructional staff perceptions of how often students engage in different activities.
  • The importance instructional staff place on various areas of learning and development.
  • The nature and frequency of instructional staff -student interactions.
  • How instructional staff organize their time, both in and out of the classroom.

The information learned from our faculty, instructors, and graduate students can then be used to identify areas of strength, as well as aspects that we may decide warrant attention. The results are intended to be a catalyst for productive discussions related to teaching, learning and the quality of our undergraduates' educational experience at WMU.

WMU has participated in the FSSE during the following years: 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2017, 2022, and 2025. To view information and reports for the year you are interested in, or if you have any questions, please contact us.
