Graduate programs

Our vibrant department is home to some 60 graduate students, most of whom are supported by teaching assistantships or other scholarships. In a typical year our graduate students compile a record of publications, productions, presentations, and prizes that testifies to their impressive abilities as writers, scholars and teachers.

The Department of English at Western Michigan University offers a Master of Arts, a Master of Fine Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in English or in Creative Writing. Areas of specialization include:

  • Creative writing
  • English education
  • Literature and language

Our English graduate degrees do not require the GRE.
