Higher Education Emergency Relief Funding
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress on March 7, 2020. This bill allotted funds to provide fast and direct economic aid to the American people negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds were allocated to the Office of Postsecondary Education as the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). Because of HEERF, Western Michigan University has been able to financially assist students through these grant funds.

Biden-Harris administration's student debt relief plan
On Aug. 24, 2022, the Biden-Harris administration and the U.S. Department of Education announced a federal student debt cancellation plan. According to the announcement, the U.S. Department of Education will provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients.
The U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision blocking the one-time student debt relief plan. Student loan interest resumed on Sept. 1, 2023, with first payments expected in October 2023.
The Federal Student Aid website will update information and will be the source for further announcements.
