Located on the main campus, WMU's Sindecuse Health Center offers convenient, cost-saving services with an experienced staff dedicated to maintaining and improving patient health.

Western Michigan University (WMU) automatically enrolls all international students in the international student health insurance plan. WMU has contracted with GeoBlue as its health insurance provider for international students for the 2025-2026 academic year. This is a single, comprehensive plan designed to meet your health care needs, regardless of age or preexisting conditions. GeoBlue cannot deny you coverage or increase your premium based on any health issues you had prior to enrollment. The plan also meets the coverage requirements established by the U.S. Department of State for exchange visitors and international students on J-1 or J-2 visas.

Beginning in the fall of 2025, insurance premium costs will be incorporated into your WMU tuition and fees. There are many benefits to this approach. It will simplify both the enrollment and payment process and also eliminate a need for registration holds. This change will ensure that all international students are covered from the start of the academic year.

Health insurance coverage in the U.S. is often complex and specific to your situation. It is important to review your plan and understand the benefits available to you. To assist you in learning how to use your health insurance effectively,  I3S strongly recommends that you:

  • Read the GeoBlue Member Guide
  • Review the Glossary of Terms
  • Check the FAQs
  • Contact GeoBlue if you have questions about your coverage:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

GeoBlue offers comprehensive health insurance coverage tailored for international students. This includes:

  • Doctor visits – primary care, urgent care, specialists
  • Hospital stays (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Laboratory tests and diagnostics
  • Mental health care
  • Prescription medications (with co-pay)
  • Ambulance transport (if medically necessary)

You must see an in-network provider to receive the highest coverage and lowest out-of-pocket costs. Use the GeoBlue provider directory to find one near you.

GeoBlue does not cover:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications (e.g., ibuprofen, cold meds)
  • Routine dental and vision care
  • Elective procedures (e.g., cosmetic surgery)
  • Injuries from illegal activities
  • Car accident-related costs (should be covered by auto insurance)
  • Routine physical exams or wellness visits (unless required for school entry or athletics)

Note: Dental/vision emergencies may be covered if due to illness/injury.

Yes. Some services have conditions or special steps:

  • Pre-existing conditions: Covered as long as they are not specifically excluded under the plan.
  • Mental health care: Covered (amount of covered sessions may be limited).
  • Chronic illnesses: Covered, but ongoing management may require a treatment plan.

If you're managing a long-term health condition, we encourage you to call a GeoBlue representative early in the semester.

Western Michigan University partners with Gallagher, a global insurance broker, to identify the best insurance provider for our international students each year. GeoBlue was selected based on several key factors, including its comprehensive coverage, $0 deductible and the low premium.

If you are here with your family, whether to purchase GeoBlue for your dependents will be influenced by the status of your visa. Dependents of J-1 visa holders must enroll in Western's selected health insurance plan through GeoBlue, or through an approved provider to meet the U.S. Department of State’s requirement for minimum coverage, as defined on the DS-2019 form. We strongly encourage all other dependents, including those with F-2 visas, to be fully covered during their time in the United States due to the high cost of health care.

Yes, a benefit to incorporating insurance coverage into your WMU tuition and fees is that you can be on a payment plan with the university.

Yes, if you have a U.S.-based insurance that is equal or better than GeoBlue, it is possible to get a waiver. However, WMU’s international student health insurance policy is competitive, and it is unlikely you will find adequate coverage at a lower cost.

Exceptions will be granted on a case-by-case basis through a waiver review process. To submit a waiver request, email a copy of your current health insurance policy to GeoBlue at @email. Gallagher will review your policy and notify WMU of its decision. If your alternative insurance is declined, you will be enrolled in WMU's chosen GeoBlue plan.

All waiver decisions are made by Gallagher, not WMU.

International students who do not already have a waiver on file will be automatically enrolled prior to the start of each semester/term (Fall, Spring and/or Summer) in which they are registered for classes.

Enrollment in insurance is based on course registration. Thus, WMU will only enroll students in the summer term if they are registered for classes. It is highly recommended you maintain insurance throughout your time in the U.S. If you remain in the U.S. over the summer, but are not enrolled in courses, you should purchase the international student health insurance plan on your own.

A fixed fee you pay for certain services like doctor visits or prescriptions, usually at the time of the appointment.

Good news! Geoblue has no copays for doctors. A small co-pay for prescriptions:

  • Generics: $25 copay per prescription, then covered at 100%.
  • Brand-name drugs: $50 copay per prescription, then covered at 100%.
  • Injectables: $50 copay per prescription, then covered at 100%.

The amount you must pay out of pocket each year before your insurance starts covering most services.

Good news! Geoblue has a $0 deductible for doctors’ visits.

  • ER: For life-threatening conditions or serious injuries.
  • Urgent Care: For non-life-threatening issues (e.g., minor cuts, flu, infections) when your regular doctor is unavailable.

Not a bill—just a record of services. You can access your EOB through your Geoblue online account or by logging into the Geoblue mobile app with your account.

A doctor or healthcare facility that has a contract with your insurance company to provide services at a lower cost.

Always try to visit in-network providers, when possible, so that Geoblue will cover your doctor’s bill at 100% with $0 deductible.

The most you will have to pay for covered healthcare in a year (includes deductible, co-pays, and coinsurance). After this, insurance covers 100%.

Your out-of-pocket maximum with Geoblue is $6,500 per policy year.

Once you reach this limit, your insurance covers all additional costs for covered services.

A provider that does not have a contract with your insurance. Seeing one may result in higher costs or no coverage at all.

Check with your insurance plan before scheduling appointments. If you go to an out of network provider, Geoblue will only pay 70% of your doctor’s bill.

Approval from your insurance company before certain services or medications are covered.

Without it, you might be responsible for the full cost.

The amount you pay to have health insurance. For international students, the premium is usually billed per semester as part of your tuition or student fees.

Think of it as a subscription fee for your health plan—it gives you access to coverage even if you don’t use any services that semester.

A formal request from a primary care provider for you to see a specialist or get certain services.

You will not usually need a referral with GeoBlue. However, certain situations may require a referral before they’ll cover specialist care.
