Western is amping up sustainability efforts. The institution, in partnership with Consumers Energy, unveiled 10 new dual-port electric vehicle chargers on campus capable of powering up 20 vehicles simultaneously the most public chargers of any university in the state.

WMU's steam trap energy program sets a precedent

As one of the first universities in the United States to address climate change, WMU teamed up with Armstrong International to build a campuswide steam trap energy savings program that has now been modeled by 37 other universities to reduce their carbon footprints.

WMU gets free rides

All WMU students, faculty and staff have been eligible to ride Kalamazoo County METRO Transit free of charge since 1998.

No more coal usage at plant

WMU completely eliminated the use of coal in the Robert M. Beam Power Plant in 1999. Since then, much of campus has been powered, heated and cooled using two super-efficient natural gas cogeneration turbines.
