The WMU Haenicke Institute for Global Education offers a variety of short-term program options — less than eight weeks in length — that enable international students and professionals to explore Western Michigan University.

Study English Language and American Culture

Study English language and culture through Western Michigan University's Center for English Language and Culture for International Students (CELCIS).

This program offers students the opportunity to gain intensive English language instruction while experiencing U.S. American culture at Western Michigan University. Each week includes 20 hours of intensive English language and U.S. American culture instruction in addition to social, cultural and recreational activities.

Students may choose to attend the program in-person or virtually.

Program Dates: 

May 5, 2021 (arrival) – June 26, 2021 (departure) – 7 weeks
May 5, 2021  (arrival) – June 5, 2021  (departure) – 4 weeks
June 28, 2021  (arrival) – August 21, 2021  (departure) – 7 weeks
June 28, 2021  (arrival) – July 31, 2021  (departure) – 4 weeks
August 25, 2021  (arrival) – September 18, 2021  (departure) – 3.5 weeks

Location: Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan, U.S.A.*

*Students interested in attending virtually should select this option in the pre-application form.

Accommodations: Homestay (dependent on availability); residence hall or hotel stay may be available

Visa requirement: Student visa (in-person option only)

Making Sense of American Politics (3 weeks), 2021 dates coming soon! 

This program offers students the opportunity to gain 3 weeks of exposure to the U.S. political system, how U.S. political coalitions work and how conflicts between political entities and groups are addressed. Each week includes approximately 20 hours of instruction in addition to social, cultural and recreational activities. This program will be delivered by Dr. Peter Wielhouwer, associate professor of political science and director of the Institute for Government and Politics.

Study English language and culture through Western Michigan University's Center for English Language and Culture for International Students (CELCIS).

This program offers participants the opportunity to spend 3 weeks experiencing U.S. American culture and high-ranked academic programs at Western Michigan University. Each week includes approximately 15 hours of instruction in addition to social, cultural and recreational activities. This program will discuss the following topics from the U.S. perspective: politics, education, sports and leisure, science and engineering, environmental sustainability, aviation and more!

Participants may choose to attend the program in-person or virtually.

Participants receive 15 hours of English language and culture instruction through Western Michigan University's Center for English Language and Culture for International Students (CELCIS).

This program offers participants the opportunity to spend 4 weeks experiencing U.S. American culture and improving written and conversational English skills. Each week, participants receive 15 hours of English language and U.S. American culture instruction in addition to social, cultural and recreational activities.

Participants may choose to attend the program in-person or virtually.
