Staff Spotlight: Anthony Smith – From Student Technician to IT Specialist
Jump on any opportunity that piques your interest. If you see a job that interests you, apply—you never know what might happen.
Meet Anthony Smith, one of the dedicated Help Desk Specialists at Western Michigan University’s Office of Information Technology (OIT). Anthony’s journey from student to staff is a story of growth, opportunity, and a passion for technology.
From Lawrence to WMU
Anthony grew up in Lawrence, Michigan—a small town with a graduating class of just 30 students. With deep family ties to WMU (his grandmother, parents, and even great-grandfather were Broncos), choosing Western felt like a natural step. A scholarship and proximity to home sealed the deal.
Starting at the Help Desk
Anthony began his WMU career as a student technician at the Help Desk. When a full-time position opened during his senior year, he seized the opportunity. Today, he fields calls and cases from WMU users, troubleshooting account and network issues, and mentoring student technicians.
A Day in the Life
Anthony’s day starts at 8 a.m., reviewing overnight cases with his team before jumping on calls and assisting students. Meetings with other IT teams keep collaboration strong, and every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities.
Building Toward Cybersecurity
Currently pursuing a master’s degree in cybersecurity, thanks to WMU’s tuition benefits, Anthony sees his role as a stepping stone toward his long-term goal of working in cybersecurity. He’s already gained valuable experience through research projects on generative AI and network security.
Life Beyond Work
Outside the office, Anthony enjoys exploring Kalamazoo with his girlfriend, visiting the farmer’s market, golfing, playing pickup basketball, and gaming with friends. His current favorites? Rocket League, Hollow Knight, and a bit of Call of Duty.
