Upcoming Update to Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Posted by Gary Barton on September 23, 2025SMS Option to Be Retired – Enhanced Security with Verified Push
To continue improving account security at Western Michigan University, we’re making a change to our two-factor authentication (2FA) system.
Starting September 30, 2025, we will begin transitioning users away from SMS text messaging as a method for two-factor authentication (2FA). Effective October 13, 2025, the SMS text messaging option for 2FA will no longer be available for any WMU accounts.
We’re upgrading to Duo Verified Push, a more secure method for verifying your identity. Once transitioned, Duo Verified Push will present you with a multi-digit number to enter into your Duo application to verify your identity and intent to securely access your application. This enhancement helps protect your account with stronger security while keeping the login experience simple and reliable.
If you’re currently using SMS for 2FA, we recommend upgrading to the Duo App and begin using the Duo Push method now to be ready for next month’s change.
