Dr. Michael Harnar is an assistant professor in the College of Education and Human Development’s Educational Leadership, Research, and Technology Department where he directs the Interdisciplinary PhD in Evaluation program, or “IDPE” and teaches in the Evaluation, Measurement, and Research or “EMR” program. He has been at Western Michigan University since 2017, teaching evaluation and research methods courses. He has presented his research at more than 20 international conferences and has published several peer-reviewed research articles on evaluation. His research mainly focuses on evaluation quality. He is Co-Executive Editor of the open-access Journal of MultiDisciplinary Evaluation (www.JMDE.com). He is an active evaluator, outside his role at WMU; recent evaluation projects include developing an evaluation framework for new technologies for the U.S. Department of Transportation and performing metaevaluations for organizations like Doctors Without Borders and the U.S. Agency for International Development. Dr. Harnar has received the Western Michigan University Excellence in Discovery Award and the American Evaluation Association's Outstanding Evaluation Award. He holds a Ph.D. in Evaluation and Applied Research Methods from Claremont Graduate University and is a retired Naval Officer.
