Compass for graduate students

COMPASS

Centering on Mentorship, Professionalization, and Student Success

Centering on Mentorship, Professionalization and Student Success (COMPASS) is an expansive collection of online resources that supplies answers and advice on what is commonly known as the “hidden curriculum” of graduate school. Previously unwritten rules and expectations regarding such topics as mentorship, first-time teaching, funding, and applying for awards are now spelled out for master’s and Ph.D. students in an easy-to-read format. Use the COMPASS points below to explore this resource in detail.

Click the link below to watch a short video exploring the benefits of COMPASS through the experiences of WMU community members who have utilized the resource to support their well-being, resilience, and success.

If you’re a new student and haven’t yet completed an Individual Development Plan (IDP), we recommend starting there. Click the IDP link below for a document that will help guide you through each year of your program and record your progress.
