Greatness from small beginnings: a first-generation immigrant's educational journey

Kevin Curiel Vazques, a current doctoral student and graduate of the master of arts program ('22) tells his story.

Kevin Curiel-Vazquez (’19 B.A.; ’22 M.A.) is the Chief Operating Officer of Olvera Enterprises, overseeing the Supermercado Mexico chain in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and raised in Grand Rapids, Kevin is a first-generation college student whose parents sacrificed everything for his and his siblings’ future. After earning an associate degree from Grand Rapids Community College while working to support himself, Kevin faced barriers as a DACA student pursuing a bachelor’s. A scholarship denial at Western Michigan University nearly derailed his plans, but through persistence and guidance from advisor Erasmos Salinas, the decision was reversed. Kevin earned both his B.A. and M.A., developing skills in organizational analysis, project management, and transformational leadership along the way.

Today, Kevin leads initiatives supporting immigrant communities, serves on nonprofit boards, and mentors first-generation students navigating higher education. He reflects on his journey as a testament to perseverance: “Slow and steady wins the race. Keep moving forward, even if it takes time.” He credits his success to family sacrifice, his own resilience, and the belief WMU showed in his potential. Kevin hopes his story inspires other first-generation students to embrace challenges, pursue their dreams, and build their own paths to success.
