Haenicke Institute for Global Education Study Abroad Scholarship: Virtual

The Haenicke Institute for Global Education (HIGE) Study Abroad Scholarship: Virtual offers need–based scholarships for short-term study abroad courses (with no international travel) directed by Western Michigan University faculty in summer I or summer II session. These awards are worth up to $200 and all students with demonstrated financial need will receive some funding. All students who meet the qualifications below are encouraged to apply.

Students need not be accepted or committed to a study abroad program before applying, but they must ultimately commit to participation on a short-term study abroad course (minimum three credits; with no international travel) taught by WMU faculty in summer I or summer II session to be eligible. Students who opt to take a virtual study abroad program in lieu of a WMU SA travel program that has been cancelled will become eligible to apply for the HIGE Study Abroad Scholarship: Virtual if the program occurs in summer I or summer II session.

Please note: Some exceptions apply to those that WMU Study Abroad and The Haenicke Institute have made other financial arrangements and commitments.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in a WMU degree-granting program; students who graduate before the start of the study abroad course are not eligible.
  • Applicants must have filed a FAFSA with the WMU Student Financial Aid office to be eligible for this award. Pell eligibility and estimated family contribution are used to determine financial need.
  • Admission and commitment to a short-term study abroad course (minimum three credits; with no international travel) taught by WMU faculty in summer I or summer II session.
