This section highlights the distinctive strengths and unique features of the program—what we call “trust marks.” These may include specialized focus areas, innovative learning experiences, standout faculty expertise, or other elements that make this program a compelling choice for prospective students.

The School Counseling Certificate program requires a minimum of 15 credit hours and provides a blend of foundational knowledge, leadership and advocacy skills, and practical experience in school settings. You will engage with coursework that emphasizes supporting diverse students, preparing youth for postsecondary and career success, and applying culturally competent counseling practices. Hands-on internships allow you to translate theory into practice, gaining real-world experience under supervision. Depending on your prior academic background, additional foundational or school counseling coursework may be required to ensure you are fully prepared for the certificate program.

For those seeking to qualify in Michigan for: (1) School Counselor K-12 Licenses (no Michigan Teaching Certificate required) or (2) Counseling Endorsements (K-12) on an existing current, valid Michigan Teaching Certificate. This School Counseling Certificate is in part, a response to Michigan Public Act (P.A.) 288, 2000. This law mandates that candidates must be recommended by sponsoring counselor education institutions and also pass the Michigan Department of Education Guidance Counselor Examination in order to be licensed or endorsed.
