Find a Mentor

Mentoring is a proven way to ensure success as an engineering student.

Western's College of  Engineering and Applied Sciences alumni mentoring program pairs incoming engineering students the opportunity to learn from the insights, experiences and passions of experienced engineers, engineering technologists and computer scientists. Students can opt-in to the program and are paired with an appropriate mentor based on shared interests and goals. Each pair is expected to meet approximately twice per month (in-person or virtually) during the student’s first academic year at WMU.

Timeline

  • Spring and Summer—Alumni mentors invited to participate
  • Summer—Incoming students invited to participate
  • Late Summer or Early Fall—Student-mentor pairings announced
  • Early Fall—Kickoff training and expectations sessions for mentors and students (required).
  • Early Fall—College-wide picnic and social (optional but encouraged).

Expectations

Students who are paired with mentors should expect to:

  • Meet for 30-60 minutes at least once per month with their assigned mentor,
  • Spend time prior to each mentoring session laying out an agenda for the conversation including general topics and specific question or talking points, and
  • Work with their mentor to identify specific goals to be achieved during the mentoring relationship.
