First-year-student scholarships

Four year awards for select high achieving students.

All admissions application materials are due March 1st of your senior year to be considered. Students who list a College of Engineering and Applied Sciences program as their major interest may be considered for the Excellence Award. Financial need may be considered. Annual awards typically range from $1,000 - $4,000.

There is no additional application for consideration. Awards to be announced in early Spring.

Award amount

$2,000 per year ($1,000 in each fall and spring semesters), renewable for up to four years, totaling $8,000.

Eligibility criteria

  • Any first-time, domestic, freshmen degree-seeking student admitted to Western Michigan University.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale upon admission.
  • Must declare a major in College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Must have completed FAFSA on file.
  • Application and essay must be submitted or postmarked no later than February 15 of your senior year and must answer the following questions:
    1. Explain the role of multiculturalism in today's global society.
    2. What roles have multicultural experiences played in your life, and how will those experiences help you in college and career?
    3. How do you see WMU CEAS enhancing your multicultural experience and awareness?

Scholarship Universe

Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Top candidates from the pool will be considered for scholarships based on appropriateness of essay and academic profile. Financial need based on the submission of FAFSA may also be considered.

Maintenance criteria

  • Scholarship recipients are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point at WMU.
  • Scholarship recipients must be enrolled full time (12 credit hours/semester) at WMU  *some exclusions may apply*.
  • Scholarship recipients must maintain a major in CEAS.

Award amount

  • Annual awards range from $1,000 to $4,000.
  • Awards disbursed in no more than four years.
  • Award amounts and scholarship disbursements are decided by the CEAS Scholarship Committee and are not subject to appeal.

Eligibility criteria

This is a competitive scholarship. Top candidates from the pool will be considered based on appropriateness of essay, recommendation letters, and academic profile.

  • Any first-time, domestic, freshman degree-seeking student admitted to WMU.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale upon admission.
  • Must declare a major in College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

  • Students must submit an essay that highlights leadership experiences, successes, and learning. Up to 2 letters of recommendation may be included with the essay submission and must be received no later than February 15 of your senior year.

Scholarship Universe

Recommendations

Renewable scholarship will provide $4,000 per year for up to 4 years, totaling $16,000 for select applicants. The scholarship committee will select recipients from applicants who meet qualifications. Financial need may be considered. Students must have completed FAFSA on file.

Deadline to apply is April 1st of student's senior year in high school.

Teacher/coach recommendation form

SME Education Foundation has awarded $18 million to over 5,000 students since 2005. Graduating high school seniors as well as students pursuing two-year, four-year or graduate degrees in manufacturing or engineering are eligible to apply for scholarships.

Applications are accepted from Nov. 1 to Feb. 1.

Current student scholarships

Award amount

Up to $1,000 for one academic year, split equally between fall and spring semesters.

Eligibility criteria

  • Be enrolled full time in an accredited program in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.50 at the time of application in 26 or more accumulated hours at Western Michigan University. 
  • Resume and letter of recommendation required.
  • Preference may be given to applications with demonstrated financial need.

Award amount

$1,500 for one academic year, to be split equally between fall and spring semesters.

Eligibility criteria

  • WMU student completing final year of a bachelor’s degree within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a senior at the time the award is granted.
  • Attained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 in all approved course work.
  • Graduated from a U. S. high school.
  • Seniors are selected by the College of Engineering and Applied Science Scholarship Committee based primarily on scholarship. Other factors which may be considered are demonstrated leadership ability, participation in community and school activities, financial need and special aptitudes.

Apply through Scholarship Universe

  • Up to $5,000 per year for each of four scholarships and may be renewed for one additional year. 
  • Must be nominated by faculty member for consideration.

Declaration of intent

The Kenneth W. Knight Scholarship fund is invested in perpetuity with annual earnings used to make the scholarship awards. Scholarships shall be given to graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in the engineering curriculum of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Recipients shall be chosen on the basis of academic standing, scholarly and professional activities and achievement.

Award distribution

Yearly earnings of the scholarship will be disbursed one-half to undergraduate students and one-half to graduate students.

Undergraduate awards

There is NO APPLICATION for this award.

The purpose of the award is to accelerate the path and enhance the opportunity for a greater spectrum of scholarly activity of current students who have met requirements for advancement to upper division courses. The students will have proven to be strong candidates for graduation in their respective programs.

A minimum 3.25 grade point average or above in all enrolled courses including repeated courses is required for consideration.  Candidates must have demonstrated leadership within the College, a commitment to their profession, and the potential for significant contribution to the profession.

The award will be up to $5,000 per year for up to 10 scholarships depending on funding availability. Scholarships may be renewed for one time.

Department recommendations, forwarded through the department chair, will be presented to the College Scholarship Committee by February 15. The College Scholarship Committee will make its recommendations to the dean.

Graduate awards

There is NO APPLICATION for this award.

The purpose of the awards to graduate students is to aid in the recruitment of excellent candidates to the graduate programs in the College who have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research. The awards may be used to augment assistantships awarded by departments.

The award may be renewed one time. Renewal will be reviewed at the end of the first academic year. To be considered for renewal, the recipient must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.25 and will have a letter of support from their research advisor documenting satisfactory research progress.

The award will be up to $5,000 per year for up to 10 scholarships depending on funding availability. The awards may be combined with a graduate stipend.

Two (2) letters of recommendation from faculty will be required of applicants. The letters are to address the students’ commitment to advancing their area of study. Departmental recommendations, forwarded through the department chair, will be presented to the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Scholarship Committee by February 15.

The committee will make its recommendations to the dean.

Award amount

At least $500 for one academic year, split equally between fall and spring semesters.

Eligibility criteria

  • Be a first, second, or third year undergraduate enrolled full time in an accredited program in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • Have a GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of application in 14 or more accumulated hours at Western Michigan University. 
  • Resume required.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with outstanding GPAs combined with a record of service to the university or larger community.

  • Be a first, second, or third year undergraduate enrolled full time in an accredited program in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

  • Preference may be given to applicants with outstanding GPAs.
  • Preference may also be given to applicants from St. Joe County.

The Monroe-Brown Internship Program is dedicated to matching student interests with company needs for internships in the Southwest Michigan region. CEAS students may be eligible for one of several paid summer internships followed by a $2500 scholarship.
