October lectures highlight college and community expertise

Two departments in the College of Health and Human Services will host annual events in October that bring experts in their fields to campus to participate in lectures and discussions about topics relevant to their professions.

The Department of Occupational Therapy hosts the 16th Annual Barbara A. Rider Colloquium in the College of Health and Human Services building on Oct. 25.

This daylong event features lectures and sessions with leading OT educators and practitioners. The theme of this year's event is "The Role of Occupational Therapy in Pain Management." Keynote speaker, Dr. Stacey Watson, from the Pain Rehabilitation Program at Mary Free Bed in Kalamazoo, will speak about "A Doctor’s Perspective on an Interprofessional Team Approach." She has extensive experience managing chronic disease and chronic pain, and with acute symptom management.

Van Riper Lecture

The Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences hosts the 37th annual Van Riper Lecture on Oct. 25 at the Fetzer Center on WMU's main campus in Kalamazoo.

The Van Riper Lecture series brings nationally recognized experts for pre-service and in-service training on topics in communication disorders in addition to important educational experiences for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology professionals. This year's theme is "Cognitive Communication Disorders in Aging Populations."

Dr. Nidhi Mahendra, San Jose State University, is the keynote speaker and will be speaking on "The Aging to Dementia Continuum." Dr. Mahendra’s areas of expertise are dementia, aging, aphasia, multicultural issues in speech-language pathology, and palliative care.  During the afternoon, an interdisciplinary case study panel will discuss "Transdisciplinary Approaches to Support Individuals with Cognitive Communication Disorders ."
