Nursing student achieves debt-free education
For Abigail Houtrouw, a senior in the Bronson School of Nursing (BSON) and the Lee Honors College (LHC) at Western Michigan University, the college experience has been even more meaningful than she ever expected. She describes her time at WMU as academically rigorous yet deeply supportive, thanks to professors and clinical instructors who are committed to helping students succeed.
Abigail recently completed her Honors Thesis through LHC, working closely with a committee of faculty mentors whose insight and guidance made the process both enriching and rewarding. She considers their mentorship one of the most impactful aspects of her academic journey.
Abigail has also benefited from significant financial support through the Heyl Scholarship and the Kalamazoo Promise. The Heyl Scholarship—one of the region’s most competitive academic awards—covers tuition, books, rent, and study abroad expenses for eligible Kalamazoo Public Schools graduates pursuing nursing at WMU or STEM fields at Kalamazoo College.
With her education fully funded, Abigail will graduate debt-free, a privilege she says has allowed her to focus completely on her academic and clinical training without the stress of financial pressure.
These scholarships also opened the door for Abigail to study abroad in Portugal for a month—an experience she describes as unforgettable and deeply meaningful both personally and professionally. The opportunity expanded her worldview and strengthened her commitment to compassionate, culturally informed nursing care.
Abigail is grateful for the opportunities and support she has received throughout her time at WMU. She credits her instructors, mentors, and scholarship programs for shaping her growth and preparing her for her future career. She looks forward to carrying these experiences with her as she enters the nursing profession.
