KALAMAZOO, Mich.—Throughout her time at WMU, Micah Lee, master's student in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology, has embraced every opportunity to grow—serving as a student ambassador, graduate assistant and student clinician. These roles have allowed her to develop leadership skills and gain hands-on experience in her field. But behind the success was a challenge: financial hardship.

That’s where the John “Mick” Hanley Endowed Scholarship made all the difference. “I was honored to receive this scholarship, as it has been incredibly beneficial during my financial hardships,” Micah shared. “Without it, I would not have been able to participate in the clinical experiences required for my internship, which have provided me with invaluable knowledge and growth.”

The scholarship not only eased financial stress but opened doors to essential clinical training—an experience that will continue to shape Micah’s future as a clinician. She credits her supportive educators for advocating for her and recognizing her hard work ethic and diverse background.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity this scholarship has given me,” Micah said. “I remain committed to continuing my development as a clinician and making a difference in the lives of others.”

Micah’s story is a testament to the power of scholarships and the generosity of donors who believe in students’ potential. Their support doesn’t just fund education—it creates pathways for future leaders in health and human services.
