Physician assistant students participate in 2026 Capitol Summit
Three Western Michigan University Physician Assistant (WMU PA) students, Devin Horn, Madison Pellman and Hailey Chandler, recently represented the program at the 2026 Capitol Summit, hosted by the Michigan Academy of Physician Associates in Lansing. The annual event brings together practicing physician assistants, students and state legislators to engage in meaningful dialogue about healthcare policy, patient access and the evolving role of PAs across Michigan.
Throughout the day, WMU PA students participated in organized meetings with lawmakers, sharing their perspectives as future healthcare providers and advocating for policies that support both the profession and the patients they will serve. These conversations offered students a unique opportunity to see firsthand how clinical practice and public policy intersect, reinforcing the importance of advocacy as a core component of professional responsibility.
The Capitol Summit is designed to empower both current and future PAs to become active voices in shaping healthcare delivery. For students, the experience extends beyond the classroom—providing real-world exposure to legislative processes, policy development and the importance of representing the needs of patients at the state level. Engaging directly with policymakers helps ensure that decisions impacting healthcare are informed by those on the front lines of patient care.
Participation in events like the Capitol Summit reflects WMU’s commitment to developing well-rounded physician assistants who are not only clinically competent but also prepared to lead and advocate within the healthcare system. Opportunities like this encourage students to build confidence, communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders and understand the broader systems that influence patient outcomes.
We are proud of these students for their initiative, professionalism and dedication to advancing the PA profession. Their involvement highlights the strength of the WMU PA program and its ongoing commitment to preparing graduates who will make meaningful contributions to healthcare in Michigan and beyond.
